Ko je bila Američanka Becca iz Indiane stara komaj 22 let, je izvedela novico, ki jo je težko sprejela. Zdravniki so ji morali odstraniti vse zobe. Razlog niso bile droge ali slaba higiena, temveč resno pomanjkanje pomembnih vitaminov in hranil.

Njena zgodba spominja na težave, s katerimi so se v preteklosti srečevali mornarji zaradi pomanjkanja vitamina C in skorbuta, vendar takšne zdravstvene posledice očitno niso omejene le na pretekla obdobja. Becca je več let trpela zaradi hudih bolečin, otečenega obraza in hitro propadajočih zob. »Bila sem ves čas v bolečinah. Ljudje so me čudno gledali in vsi so mislili, da sem na drogah. Celo zdravniki so mi rekli, da sem zagotovo jemala metamfetamin,« se spominja. A kot poudarja, tega nikoli ni počela.

Preiskave razkrile resno pomanjkanje hranil

Kot otrok ni imela dostopa do redne zobozdravstvene oskrbe, vendar z zobmi dolgo časa ni imela večjih težav. Stanje se je začelo hitro slabšati okoli 18. leta, ko so se zobje začeli kvariti, težave pa so se iz leta v leto stopnjevale. Zdravniški pregledi so pokazali izrazito pomanjkanje vitamina B12, vitamina D, vitamina C in železa. Zaradi nepopravljivih poškodb je sledil deveturni kirurški poseg, pri katerem so ji odstranili vse zobe.

Po operaciji se je morala znova naučiti jesti, nato pa več mesecev čakati, da so se dlesni zacelile in je lahko dobila zobno protezo. Začetek ni bil preprost. Prva proteza ji ni ustrezala in je bila zanjo velik psihični udarec. »Ko so mi jo namestili, sem se psihično sesula. Mislila sem, da se nikoli več ne bom mogla zares nasmejati,« je povedala.

Danes želi spremeniti pogled na zobne proteze

Ko je dobila ustrezno protezo, se je njena samozavest vrnila. Kljub temu se še vedno srečuje z neprijetnimi komentarji na družbenih omrežjih. Nekateri ji pišejo, da je videti kot 75-letnica ali da je »premlada za protezo«. Neprijetne izkušnje je doživela tudi v zasebnem življenju, ko se je je nekdanji partner zaradi proteze sramoval. Sedanji partner jo po njenih besedah popolnoma podpira.

Becca se je zato odločila, da bo o svoji izkušnji javno govorila. Opozoriti želi, da zobne proteze niso povezane zgolj s starostjo ali uživanjem drog. »V Združenih državah več kot 40 milijonov ljudi nosi zobno protezo. V večini primerov razlog niso droge, ampak bolezen, genetika, zdravstvene težave, staranje ali poškodbe,« poudarja. 

S svojo zgodbo želi opogumiti ljudi, ki se zaradi izgube zob sramujejo svojega videza, in jim sporočiti, da njihov nasmeh ne določa njihove vrednosti.
