Na prvi pogled se njene besede zdijo presenetljive. Družina namreč za hipoteko, šolnine, glasbene in športne dejavnosti, potovanja ter hišne ljubljenčke vsak mesec nameni približno 5000 ameriških dolarjev (dobrih 4300 evrov). Poleg tega za hrano porabijo še okoli 800 dolarjev (slabih 700 evrov) na teden, kar skupne mesečne izdatke dvigne na približno 8200 dolarjev oziroma nekaj več kot 7000 evrov.

Po evropskih oziroma slovenskih merilih gre za zelo visok znesek, vendar je treba upoštevati, da družina živi v Kaliforniji, kjer so življenjski stroški med najvišjimi v Združenih državah Amerike. Ob tem del izdatkov predstavljajo tudi dejavnosti in življenjski slog, ki niso nujno povezani zgolj z osnovnimi potrebami otrok.

Ključ sta načrtovanje in prilagodljivost

Kristine poudarja, da je skrivnost uspešnega družinskega proračuna predvsem dobra organizacija. Družina večino obrokov pripravlja doma iz svežih sestavin, hrano pa kuhajo za več dni vnaprej. Veliko prihranijo tudi zato, ker mlajši otroci nosijo oblačila in uporabljajo igrače starejših sorojencev.

Če je treba zmanjšati stroške, se po njenih besedah najprej odpovejo obiskom restavracij, nakupovanju in drugim oblikam zabave, ne pa stvarem, ki jih otroci potrebujejo.

Njihov vsakdan se začne že ob 6.45 zjutraj in poteka po natančno usklajenem urniku. Šola, služba, gospodinjska opravila, snemanje vsebin za splet in priprava obrokov si sledijo skoraj brez premora. »V bistvu je to nenehen kaos. Nikoli ne sedimo in ne počnemo ničesar. Ali delamo ali skrbimo za otroke,« opisuje mama osmih otrok.

Priznava, da pot do tako velike družine ni bila vedno lahka. Po rojstvu dvojčkov je zaradi zdravstvenih zapletov skoraj izgubila življenje in nekaj časa ni razmišljala o novem naraščaju. Kljub temu sta z možem pozneje dobila še štiri otroke. Danes pravi, da svoje odločitve ne bi nikoli spremenila. »Naš svet bi bil brez njih popolnoma prazen,« poudarja.
