Medicinsko osebje je pacientov trebuh opisalo kot »odlagališče smeti« in priznalo, da je medicinski čudež, da je moški sploh preživel. Po dostopnih podatkih naj bi pacient nenavadno navado požiranja orodja in higienskih pripomočkov razvil približno mesec dni pred hospitalizacijo.
