Alice si je Wellingtona omislila, ko je bil še mladič, ne da bi slutila, v kakšnega orjaka bo zrasel. »Zdaj se spoprijemam z vsakodnevnimi težavami, za katere si nikoli nisem mislila, da se bodo pojavile,« priznava. Od sline na stenah in stropu do skoraj nemogoče naloge, kako ga spraviti v majhen avtomobil – življenje z njim je vse prej kot običajno.

Lastnica je visoka približno 163 centimetrov in tehta okoli 50 kilogramov, medtem ko je njen ljubljenec ob zadnjem obisku veterinarja tehtal krepkih 70 kilogramov. Ko se postavi na zadnje tace, meri približno 188 centimetrov: »Višji je od mojega fanta,« se smeji Alice.

Veliko telo, še večja potreba po crkljanju

Kljub impresivnim meram se Wellington očitno sploh ne zaveda svoje velikosti. Še vedno poskuša obiskovalcem sesti v naročje in se stisniti v prostore, ki so zanj občutno premajhni. Pogosto moti tudi službene sestanke prek zooma – ogromno glavo potisne pred kamero in zapolni celoten zaslon.

Rad se igra z majhnimi psi, čeprav jih lahko podre že z enim samim nerodnim gibom. Deluje zastrašujoče, a je po besedah lastnice pravi strahopetec. Boji se vreč za smeti, poštarja, šumenja gaziranih pijač, piskov plačilnih terminalov, ljudi v odsevnih jopičih in vseh glasnih zvokov.

Tudi kopanje je pravi logistični podvig. Ker ga ne morejo več spraviti v kad, ga na vrtu prhajo z cevjo – pri čemer mora biti voda obvezno topla. Ob slabem vremenu noče iz hiše, če ga je strah, pa poišče tolažbo pri svojem plišastem medvedku. »Včasih ga moramo dobesedno zvleči ven, da sploh opravi potrebo,« priznava Alice.

Wellington je tako velik, da so mu običajne pasje ovratnice in oblačila pretesni, zato nosi opremo, ki je sicer namenjena konjem. Kljub vsem izzivom pa Alice pravi, da ga ne bi zamenjala za nič na svetu – večji ko je pes, večja je njena ljubezen do njega.
