WORDS BYLINE: Hayley ChamberlainA new wearable necklace has been developed to help people monitor and protect their skin from everyday exposure to light.US startup Loox has revealed the Loox Pendant, which it claims is the world's first AI-powered device capable of tracking UV and visible light in real time.The pendant-style device has been created in response to mounting scientific evidence showing that more than 80% of visible skin ageing is caused by sun exposure. Developers say the goal is to bridge the gap between research and real-life behaviour, giving users personalised insights they can act on day to day.Worn around the neck and positioned close to the face – the most exposed part of the body – the Loox Pendant continuously measures UV and light levels throughout the day. Its three core functions include daily exposure tracking, live UV and light readings, and detection of so-called "hidden UV" sources.These hidden sources can include light entering through windows or even indoor lighting, exposure many people don't realise they're getting. The device can also alert users if they're not getting enough sunlight, which plays a key role in overall skin health.Data collected by the pendant is processed using AI and combined with more than 24 personal and environmental factors, including skin type, tone and sensitivity, UV index and cloud coverage. From this, the device delivers six tailored insights: Morning Sunlight, UV Protection, Hidden UV Protection, UV Balance, UV Recovery and Evening Light.According to the company, this allows the pendant to adapt to each user's lifestyle and surroundings, helping them decide when it's time to apply SPF – and when it may not be necessary.The hardware itself features ultra-sensitive, wide-angle UV and visible light sensors capable of detecting even very low levels of exposure. Despite its technical focus, Loox has leaned heavily into aesthetics, designing the pendant as a fashion-forward accessory made from premium materials.The wearable is water and dust resistant, comes with an adjustable neck strap and supports wireless charging. A single charge is said to last up to seven days.Loox says its broader mission is to "redefine the relationship with light" and help users harness its effects for better long-term health and longevity.The Loox Pendant will be available in SkySilver, JetBlack and SunGold finishes, with 15 different neck strap colour combinations.
