Po težkem razhodu s partnerjem si 28-letna Britanka Eleanor Sutcliff iz Birminghama ni mogla več privoščiti najemnine za stanovanje. Namesto da bi obupala, je izbrala drzno in nenavadno rešitev – kupila je star dotrajan čoln in  ga postopoma preuredila v dom. Danes pravi, da je bila to ena najboljših odločitev v njenem življenju.

Čoln je povsem po naključju našla na portalu marketplaceu na facebooku. Ker je iskala dostopno alternativo, življenje na vodi pa jo je že dolgo mikalo, se je odločila tvegati. Veliko vlogo pri tem je odigrala njena družina; starši so jo pri ideji podprli, oče pa ji je obljubil pomoč pri prenovi – in obljubo tudi držal.

Za 15 metrov dolg čoln iz leta 1986 je prostovoljna gasilka pred dvema letoma odštela približno 18.150 evrov. Čeprav je bilo plovilo v slabem stanju, je v njem takoj prepoznala potencial. Za obnovo je najela posojilo in se že isto jesen vselila, čeprav notranjost bivalnega dela takrat še ni bila povsem dokončana.

Med prenovo so zamenjali tla in stene, uredili novo kuhinjo, vgradili posteljo s shranjevalnim prostorom ter ponovno namestili kamin in peč na drva. Danes Eleanor uživa v bistveno nižjih stroških bivanja; njeni mesečni izdatki znašajo približno 500 evrov, kar vključuje stroške ogrevanja, dovolilnic in goriva.

Najemnina za stanovanje v bližini njenega delovnega mesta bi jo stala najmanj 750 funtov (približno 908 evrov) na mesec, in to brez upoštevanja dodatnih stroškov. Svojo izkušnjo deli na tiktoku, kjer ji sledi več kot 31.000 ljudi. Čeprav priznava, da življenje na vodi ni vedno preprosto – prvo zimo jo je presenetila snežna nevihta, prostora za goste pa je malo – prednosti močno odtehtajo izzive. Ker je notranjost premajhna za večjo družbo, večerjo pogosto postreže kar na strehi čolna.

Na vprašanje, ali obžaluje nakup, odgovarja, da ne bi spremenila ničesar. Naučila se je novih veščin, postala samostojnejša in se tesneje povezala z naravo. Posebej ceni občutek svobode, saj se lahko preseli, kadar koli želi, ter toplino skupnosti ljudi, ki prav tako bivajo na vodi. Življenje na čolnu ji je prineslo več kot le streho nad glavo – dalo ji je nov začetek.
